We need a new blogging system

Before I forget and whilst catching up with my posts here, I figured I'd ask for some feedback on blogging tools/systems available out there right now. Yes I know it's only been a few months since I changed the Folknology, but that was only ever a stop gap to keep things moving and solve the issues we had with Spam.

Here is some information that may help give you an idea of what we are doing and how we mean to move forward.

Right now we use a bespoke system that was designed more for news and optimised read more than write. I need a system that is better for participation. Comments can be a real target for spam as we know from experience, the system we have for now pretty much defeats automated spam bots but I need something better for the participants of Folknology. I personally tend to prefer using Ecto to construct my posts because thats what I've gotten used to so and blog solution would need to support remote posting via XML-RPC/Atom or moveabletype api's ... (Ecto has a long list of apis).

One of the other drivers for this change is our need to step up to a wider range of content for participation. In order to accommodate this we need to be able to handle more advanced media types ; Starting with podcasts and moving along with screeencasts and eventually video. .

We need to be able to administrate multiple posters and OpenId support with the ability to whitelist would be a real bonus (anyone have experience with OpenId and blogs?)

Finally we need to be able to customise the system to our requirements, thats just the way we are, we like messing with stuff to get it to meet what we believe is the best we can offer. In this regard we need to either get in the source code (preferably java or groovy based) or it needs to have some sort of plug-in or extension system.

I would really appreciate your thoughts on this either in the comments or by email if you prefer. I would also like any recommendations about how we can improve things around here, please don't be afraid to speak up say what you think..

regards
Al
